Finance and accounting
Close the month faster with variance commentary and reconciliations you can trace to a source cell, draft the board pack from final numbers, and run AP and AR routines, while the agent never posts, approves or pays.
For CFOs, controllers, FP&A analysts and accountants
Close faster with commentary you can trace to a source cell
- Variance commentary for the monthly pack drafted in under an hour, every figure tied to the trial balance
- Bank and subledger reconciliations matched by code, leaving only true exceptions for you
- Board pack narrative drafted from final numbers in one sitting
- AR follow-up drafts and AP exceptions ready for review every Monday
- A tamper-evident log of every action an agent takes in your finance workspace

Finance work runs on a calendar: daily cash, weekly AP and AR, the month-end close, the quarterly board pack and the annual budget. AI is good at the reading, the matching and the first drafts. It must never become the system of record, and every number it writes needs a source you can click.
Where AI helps in this job#
| Task | What AI does well | What you still own |
|---|---|---|
| Month-end close | Tracks the close checklist, chases status, drafts accrual support from contracts and invoices | Judgement on accruals and estimates, and sign-off |
| Variance commentary | Computes variances with code and drafts explanations from the drivers you give it | Whether each explanation is true |
| Reconciliations | Matches bank and ledger lines on amount, date and reference, and lists what is left | Investigating and clearing reconciling items |
| Forecast assumptions | Lays out drivers, sensitivities and what changed since the last forecast | The assumptions themselves |
| Board pack | Drafts the narrative and the one-page summary from final numbers | What the board needs to hear, and every number in it |
| Accounts payable | Codes invoices to GL accounts and flags duplicates and price differences against the PO | Approving and paying |
| Accounts receivable | Drafts collection emails by aging bucket and payment history | Who you chase, and pressing send |
| Controls and audit | Drafts control narratives, sample selections and request lists | Test conclusions and deficiency calls |
| Spreadsheet work | Writes, explains and checks formulas, and builds first-draft models | Model integrity and review |
Language models are weak at arithmetic done in their head, at the quirks of your chart of accounts, and at judgement: reserves, revenue recognition, materiality. A model can produce a total that looks right and is wrong. Make it compute with code or spreadsheet formulas, never mental math, and tie every output back to the ledger before it leaves your hands.
Start in 15 minutes#
These work in any assistant that can read files and run code, such as Claude with code execution on, and the spreadsheet ones also work in Copilot in Excel or Gemini in Sheets. Use exports, not screenshots.
Prompt
Variance table from two exports
Attached are two CSV exports by GL account: [CURRENT MONTH TRIAL BALANCE] and [BUDGET OR PRIOR MONTH]. Both have the columns account number, account name and amount. Use code to join them on account number and compute the variance and variance percent for every account. Show me: 1. The 10 largest variances by absolute amount, with current, comparison, variance and variance percent. 2. Accounts that appear in only one file. 3. A check that the sum of all account variances equals the difference between the two file totals. Do not explain the variances yet. Do not round until the final table.
Good output shows the code it ran and passes the check in step 3. Spot-check three accounts against your ledger before you trust the table.
Prompt
Explain and harden a spreadsheet formula
Explain this formula in plain words, then list the inputs that would make it return a wrong answer without an error, such as blanks, text stored as numbers, duplicates or a range that misses new rows. Then suggest a safer version: [PASTE FORMULA AND DESCRIBE THE COLUMNS IT USES].
Test the safer version on a copy of the sheet with a blank, a text value and a new row added at the bottom.
Prompt
Find reconciliation breaks between two lists
Attached are [BANK STATEMENT CSV] and [CASH LEDGER CSV] for [ACCOUNT] in [MONTH]. Use code to match lines that have the same amount and dates within 3 days of each other. When one line could match several, pair the closest dates and list the rest as ambiguous. Output: 1. Unmatched bank lines. 2. Unmatched ledger lines. 3. Ambiguous matches. 4. A tie-out: opening balance plus matched lines plus unmatched lines equals each file's closing balance.
If the tie-out in step 4 fails, the matching is wrong, whatever the lists say. Do not clear any item from this output alone.
Warning
Do not paste payroll, customer bank details, card data or unreleased results into a personal chat account. Use a business plan that does not train on your inputs by default: Claude Team, Enterprise or the API, ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Edu, Microsoft Copilot, or Gemini in a Google Workspace business edition. On consumer plans, such as Claude Free, Pro and Max or a personal ChatGPT account, chats can be used for training if your data settings allow it. For a listed company, unreleased results are inside information: keep them in the approved workspace only.
The tools people in this role use#
- Claude for Excel. An add-in for Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, installed from Microsoft AppSource or deployed by an admin. It answers with clickable cell citations, changes assumptions without breaking formula links, traces #REF! and #DIV/0! errors, and edits pivot tables and formatting. It does not support data tables, macros or VBA. Anthropic does not recommend it for audit-critical calculations without verification, and its activity does not appear in Enterprise audit logs.
- Copilot in Excel, part of Microsoft Copilot (formerly Microsoft 365 Copilot). Edit, plan and chat modes build tables, charts, PivotTables and formulas, and it now works on locally stored workbooks on Windows and Mac as well as on OneDrive and SharePoint files. The COPILOT() cell function was retired on 14 September 2026, so cells that still use it return #NAME? when they recalculate. Microsoft's own guidance is to avoid using Copilot for decisions in sensitive areas such as finance. The Analyst agent in Copilot Chat analyzes attached Excel and CSV files.
- Gemini in Google Sheets. The side panel writes formulas, builds pivot tables and charts, and runs multi-step edits you can undo. The =AI() function writes text into cells, up to 350 cells at a time. Google says not to rely on Gemini features for financial advice. It needs Business Standard or above, or Google AI Pro or Ultra.
- ChatGPT. Creates spreadsheets, documents and presentations, and OpenAI lists ChatGPT for Excel on its Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans.
- Accounting connectors. Check the write scope before you connect one. Intuit's QuickBooks connector for Claude (US only) reads reports and can create, update and send invoices, estimates and payment links. Xero's Claude connector is read-only at launch, but Xero's open-source MCP server can create payments and manual journals. NetSuite's AI Connector Service can create and update records. Stripe's MCP server can write, and asks a person to confirm refunds and outbound payments.
- Claude Cowork with Anthropic's finance plugin. Open-source skills: /journal-entry, /reconciliation, /financial-statements, /variance-analysis and /sox-testing, plus close-management, journal-entry-prep and audit-support in the background. The plugin states that it does not provide financial, tax or audit advice.
- Close platforms with agents. FloQast, BlackLine (Verity AI), Numeric and Trintech all sell flux or variance agents inside the close workflow. If you already own one, try its agent before you build your own.
